Pathways to Prosperity: Atlantic

This report describes the results of a telephone survey conducted in 2012 of recent immigrants to Alberta concerning their experiences with settlement services in the province, their information needs, and their economic and social integration outcomes. The goal was to provide an evidence-base to guide decisions about the scope and character of future settlement services in Alberta.

Highlights

• Immigrants constitute a higher share of residents with a university degree, as compared to their share within other educational cohorts.
• Following the pattern of the Canadian born, immigrants with a higher level of educational attainment are more likely to be employed.
• Notwithstanding this improvement, the employment gap rises for immigrants with higher education levels because, as education rises, the employment rate of the Canadian born rises faster than that of immigrants … a pattern that is more pronounced among females than males.

• Les immigrants constituent une part plus importante des résidents avec un diplôme universitaire, comparée à leur part dans d’autres cohortes universitaires.
• En suivant la tendance des nés canadiens, les immigrants avec un plus haut niveau de scolarité sont plus susceptibles d’être employés.
• Nonobstant cette amélioration, le fossé en termes d’emploi augmente pour les immigrants avec de plus hauts niveaux de scolarité parce que, quand l’éducation s’accroît, le taux d’emploi des nés canadiens augmente plus vite que celui des immigrants… Une tendance qui est plus prononcée chez les femmes que chez les hommes.

• En 2011, la vaste majorité (91%) des immigrants résidant au Canada habitaient dans une région métropolitaine.
• La part des immigrants dans la population métropolitaine était de 27%, comparé à 6% pour les régions non-métropolitaines.
• Le nombre d’immigrants qui ont déclaré 2001-2011 comme leur période d’arrivée était 40% plus élevé que ceux déclarant la décennie précédente (1991-2000).
• L’augmentation dans les régions non-métropolitaines a été de 97%, alors que l’augmentation dans les régions métropolitaine s’élevait à seulement 37%.
• Dans les régions non-métropolitaines de chaque province, hormis l’Ontario et la Colombie-Britannique, les arrivées sur la période 2001-2011 ont doublé par rapport au nombre des arrivées sur la période 1991-2000.
• Alors que les grands centres continuent d’attirer un grand nombre absolu d’immigrants, sur une base per capita, ils sont surpassés par de nombreux plus petits centres qui ont attiré relativement un nombre plus élevé d’immigrants.
